Information Technology serves only two roles in business:

1) Information:
The storage and retrieval of information for analysis and decision support.

2) Automation:
The automation of the delivery of a product or service.

I focus on the latter – although much of my automation takes the form of Executive Management & Reporting Systems.

Please read The Role & Value of Technology. Also, take a look at the Kreative Knowledge brochure.

Automation can take the form of the creation of documents using data that exist in your organization, the creation of reports & spreadsheets for distribution, automated reporting systems, the removal of time-consuming and error-ridden tasks, etc.

Automation’s value goes beyond the direct productivity savings – being realized in employees being properly focused on business growth, revenue generating activities.

Here is an example of productivity savings using the scenario of a 100 person organization. In my experience, we can realize a tangible productivity gain of 1-3 hours per employee in 3 to 6 months. Using a conservative figure of 1 hour per employee, let’s look at the numbers:

100 employees:
Automation Productivity Savings: 1 hour
1 Hour X 100 Employees = 100 hours/day
Average Employee Day: 7.75 hours
100 Hours / 7.75 = 12.9 FTE’s gained through productivity
Average Knowledge Worker’s Salary: $40,000 per year
12.9 X $40,000 = $516,000 per year in productivity savings

$516,000 in productivity savings realized year after year….

Additional benefits:

  • Employees focus on higher value work (revenue & growth related);
  • Opportunities for Automation begin to become more apparent, employee generated productivity begins to occur;
  • Greater Employee Satisfaction – When employees have better tools and are better at utilizaing the tools they have, morale and hence productivity naturally increase;
